If you haven't purchased a smart home device yet, today is the day. Check out our list of the 10 best.

2018 seems to be the year of the smart house — a host of different devices are now on the shelves to help make your home run a bit more smoothly.

If you haven't purchased your first smart home device yet, you've come to the right place. Here are the top 10 smart home devices for 2018 thus far. You can find deals on most of these smart home devices right now in the Amazon Prime Day 2018 sale.

1. Philips Hue White LED

Smart lights are one of the easiest ways to make your whole house a little smarter. LED bulbs use less power, saving you money on your home's energy cost, and they last a whole lot longer than incandescent bulbs or even HFL bulbs.

This starter kit runs around $70 but comes with four bulbs and a controller so you can turn your lights on and off remotely. You can also control them with a partner app, which makes it easy to turn the lights off even if you forget before you leave the house.

2. Amazon Echo

If you're building a smart house, one thing you need is a hub — Amazon Echo is one of the most versatile smart house hubs on the market. It's budget-friendly, with even the most elaborate version costing less than $200, and you can integrate it with nearly any smart device. Just make sure you keep children and chatty parrots away from it, or you may end up with a bunch of random stuff showing up on your Prime subscription.

3. Roku

Cut the cord — or rather, the cable. Many people are switching from traditional cable to subscription services like Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hulu instead. Roku allows you to watch all of these services and more on any television. You don't have to pay for cable to enjoy your favorite shows.

4. Nest Cam IQ

Closed circuit TV is a fantastic way to keep track of the things that are going on in your home when you're not there, but you have to wait until you can retrieve the video if something goes wrong. The Nest Cam IQ lets you do all of that and more — download the app to see what’s going on in your house in real-time, right from your cell phone.

5. Smart Thermostat

We're not going to choose a specific brand for this one because there are so many different options on the market right now.

Smart thermostats are basically the same as the old-school thermostat you're used to with a couple of perks — they're programmable, so you can save money on your energy bill by keeping your A/C or heat off when you're not home, and they allow you to control your thermostat from a companion app on your smartphone.

6. Smart Garage Door Opener

There's nothing worse than making it all the way to work only to remember you left the garage door open when you left in the morning. A smart garage door opener can give you peace of mind, as you can control the door remotely from your phone to close it from wherever you are. You can also open the door for someone who you know is arriving, or even get alerts when the door opens while you're not home.

7. Smart Power Strips

Your home lighting is one of your biggest power-suckers — second only to your home's HVAC system — and you can end up paying through the nose if you forget to turn your lights off during the day.

A smart power strip, especially one that's equipped with a motion sensor, can take all the guesswork out of your home lighting. These tools can turn on the lights when you enter a room, then shut them off again when you leave.

8. Lutron Serena Remote Controlled Shades

We all love natural light, but it could get a little awkward if you forget to close the blinds once the sun goes down. Close or open these smart shades using a remote, or program them to open or close according to when the sun shines into your various windows.

This set is pricy — starting at $350 — but it can be a great way to enjoy natural light without showing too much to the neighbors.

9. Nanoleaf Light Panels

Okay, this one is entirely aesthetic, but if you want to make your home look like a smart house, this is an excellent addition to your decor. You can assemble these triangular light panels in nearly any configuration. Plus, they’re a sleek, futuristic way to bring some subtle lighting to any room in your home.

10. Roomba

This might not be the newest smart-home accessory, but it is one of the most useful. The new Roombas are very different from the loosely autonomous vacuuming robots of yesteryear. These smart vacuums don't just clean your house — you can program them using the companion app and even direct them to different parts of your home using only your smartphone.

Smart homes might be something we're looking forward to in the future, but there are plenty of toys and devices you can pick up now to turn nearly your current home into an integrated smart house.
