A rare species of jumping spider has made its way to UK. The spider, known as Sibianor larae, can leap six feet into air and was recently spotted in a nature reserve in Cheshire during a routine survey. The spider is first of its kind discovered in British territories.

“We were delighted to hear about all the special discoveries that have been made at our Holcroft Moss Nature Reserve. The site is particularly special as it has never been exploited and cut for peat; something which is unusual for most peatland in the UK,” said Cheshire Wildlife Trust’s Sarah Bennett.

“A number of other rare bog spiders were also discovered during the surveys, including the jumping spider Heliophanus dampfi, making it the only site in England where this has been recorded. It is definitely a special site for bog-loving wildlife.”

Sibianor larae is a tiny spider, almost half the size of a matchstick head. Arachnologist Richard Burkmar found the spider earlier this year and contacted another spider expert who confirmed that it was an actually Sibianor larae spider.

"Finding a spider never before recorded in Britain is the most exciting thing that has happened to me in ten years as an amateur arachnologist,” said Burkmar. “That it was a charismatic little jumping spider is icing on the cake!"

The species was first described in 2001. It was originally discovered by a curator of arthropods at Manchester Museum Dr. Dmitri Logunov, who named the species after his wife. Despite its small size, Sibianor larae is capable of jumping up to six feet in the air which is higher than the average height of humans.

Researchers suspect that the Sibianor larae could have been in UK for thousands of years but never noticed before.
