Check out these 5 new smart home devices that will make your life a whole lot easier.

Smart houses used to be the purview of science fiction movies, but they're quickly starting to become science fact. Everything from light bulbs to online shopping can be tied into a smart device that you can control with your phone or the sound of your voice. If you're thinking about adding some smart devices to your home, here are five options that you should definitely check out.

1. Smart Power Strips

Even if your television or computer is off, it still draws small amounts of power from the plug it's connected to. While you can unplug these devices or use power strips that you can shut off, it's a hassle to turn them back on or plug them back in when you want to watch your favorite shows. That's where smart power strips come in, like the Watt Stopper IDP-3050, which comes with a motion sensor. Others can even be controlled with a smartphone.

These strips automatically shut off the power to your devices when you're not using them. You can also shut them off or turn them on from the comfort of your cell phone. Many even come with companion apps that allow you to monitor your home's power usage and figure out where your biggest power suckers are hiding.

2. Smart Lights

Old-school incandescent light bulbs generate more heat than light, which is why switching to smart LED light bulbs is such a good idea. Not only do they use a fraction of the energy that incandescent or CFL bulbs use, but kits like the Philips Hue LED starter kit allow you to control all the bulbs that you've installed from the companions app on your cell phone. Turn your lights on or off, brighten or dim them or even change their color!

3. Smart Garage Doors

There's nothing worse than making it all the way to work only to realize that you've left your garage door open. That possibility will not be a problem when you equip your home with a smart garage door opener. As long as your Wi-Fi is on, you can open or close your garage door from your smartphone no matter where you are.

Close a forgotten door, open a door for a repairman or let a family member in who has locked themselves out. These openers even let you control the lights from your smartphone.

4. Smart Locks

No one likes having to struggle with the keys when they're hauling a load of groceries. Why not let your cell phone do the talking? Smart locks can be synced to automatically unlock your door when you approach and even open it for you, depending on the type of hardware you install. These locks can even be used to snap pictures of whoever knocks on your door to improve home security.

5. Smart Assistants

While you can control all of your new smart devices with your cell phone, why bother pulling it out of your pocket when you can manage the devices and more with the sound of your voice? Smart assistant tools — including Amazon Echo, Google Home and Siri — can all be synced to your home's other smart devices, enabling you to control them with nothing more than a voice command.

Smart devices might be the wave of the future, but there are more of them available every single day. Any one of these devices can help to make your life a little bit easier.
