PlayStation Classic Fuels Hopes for N64 Classic Release

Sony's announcement of a Classic console has an impact on Nintendo fans.

Sony unveiled a blatant copy of Nintendo's NES Classic and SNES Classic. But who can blame them? Nintendo's re-release of its iconic video game consoles were huge successes. If Sony can live up to Nintendo's sales numbers of the NES Classic and SNES Classic remains to be seen. The excitement for the new PS Classic is considerable, but not out of proportion.

Many fans want to first see the complete list of the 20 games that come on the $100 PlayStation Classic. Sony so far only revealed five titles. Still, Amazon and Best Buy have already sold through their pre-order inventory of the PlayStation Classic, but you can still pre-order the PS Classic at GameStop. Sony's retro console release has pushed the hopes of Nintendo fans for an N64 Classic release for this Holiday season. There have been signs that Nintendo is working on a Nintendo 64 Classic as early as last year. There are no new revelations or rumors that Nintendo will release a third retro console. The just-launched Nintendo Switch Online service offers free NES games to play for subscribers.

It could be that Nintendo is done with retro hardware. On the other hand the N64 was a big success for the Japanese video game maker. The original N64 was released in 1996 and Nintendo sold 32 million units globally until 2003. Nintendo 64, named after its 64-bit CPU was a milestone in video game history. The N64 controller design influenced the design of modern day consoles. Games like Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time have been groundbreaking. GoldenEye 007 is considered to be one of the most influential games for shooter games. The N64 deserves a Classic treatment.
