The hype around Nintendo's NES Classic and SNES Classic that dominated the past two Holiday shopping season have faded. Sony stepped up this Holiday season with the release of the PlayStation Classic. The $99.99 Sony PlayStation Classic with 20 pre-installed games is available for pre-order and will ship on December 3.

The excitement around the PlayStation Classic is subdued. If that will change closer to release and reveal of the complete 20 pre-installed titles remains to be seen.

Nintendo NES Classic are still popular purchases. The $59.99 NES Classic is the 27th most popular item in Amazon's video game sales chart. The $79.96 SNES Classic is not far behind on rank 35. Nintendo said to restock the SNES Classic and NES Classic until end of the year. If you plan on gifting a SNES Classic or NES Classic, don't wait until last minute. Both consoles could sell out close to Christmas.

Nintendo so far showed no sign of releasing a new retro console for the Holidays 2018. There are Nintendo 64 rumors and trademarks that surfaced, but there is no hard evidence that Nintendo will release a third retro console.

The much talked about Atari VCS console will miss the Holidays. The current release date of the crowd-funded Atari console is July 2019. There are new Atari console releases for 2018 from other companies. PCube released the Atari "Retro" Handheld Console with 50 Atari 2600 games installed. There is even more new Atari hardware. AtGames released the Atari Flashback Blast! series. The range includes a different controller and pre-installed game bundles that connect via HDMI to your TV. Walmart has the exclusive on the Atari Flashback Blast! series on sale for $19.99 each.
