Nintendo Boss Kills Hope for N64 Classic

Reggie Fils-Aime says in an interview that there are no more classic consoles.

Before the Holiday season rumors built up that Nintendo would release an N64 Classic. As we know now that did not happen. The NES Classic and the SNES Classic consoles are sold through the end of the year and that's then the end of the Nintendo Classic program. We knew already that Nintendo is only making the Super NES Classic and NES Classic through the end of 2018. What we did not know is that there will be no more new Nintendo Classic Consoles.

"We’ve said that the current systems are the extent of our classic program," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé in an extensive interview with the Hollywood Reporter. The way I read this is that Nintendo is done releasing retro consoles. There will be no N64 Classic and no Game Boy Classic.

The N64 and the Game Boy would qualify for a classic release as both video game consoles have been extremely successful. The original N64 was released in 1996 and Nintendo sold 32 million units globally until 2003. Over 32 million N64 units have been sold worldwide.

The number of people who played the Game Boy is much higher than the N64. The original 8-bit Game Boy was released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America on July 31, 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990. Nintendo sold over 118 million Game Boy handheld consoles until it was discontinued in 2003.

It's a strategic decision to not follow the Classic route any further.

Nintendo is focusing on the Nintendo Switch and the future, whatever it will hold. Classic game fans can get their NES Classic games on the Nintendo Switch as part of the online service subscription. Nintendo has again an extremely successful console with the Nintendo Switch. The Classic stuff was great additional attention and revenue, but it has run its course as you can see with the failing Sony PlayStation Classic.

If you are quick you still can buy the NES Classic and the SNES Classic for instance on Amazon is short on stock and will ship both consoles missing Christmas.
