5 Things Tech Talent Looks For in an Employer

The need for employees with technical talent is on the rise, and it doesn't look to be changing anytime soon. Tech companies want to hire the best employees to get the job done, but to do that, they need to know what those employees seek in a business. Check out these ideas to determine if you're bringing in the best talent you can.

1. Positive Company Culture

While it's not surprising that salary and benefits are the most important components to bring in talented tech employees, company culture isn't far behind. Today's employees aren't looking for cubicles, rigid start times, or anything that makes them feel chained to their desks. The most talented employees want flexible hours or the ability to telecommute at least half the time so that they can spend more time with family and friends or taking care of other daily tasks. Also important are giving and receiving reviews at regular intervals, team-building events, and the feeling that they are truly a valuable part of your company.

2. Salary and Benefits

Having an excellent company culture doesn't mean you can skimp on providing the best compensation package. In fact, because today's workforce often feels severely underpaid, it's more important than ever to go the extra mile. The best idea is to find the average salary paid for the position you want to fill, and then add at least 10 percent onto it. In addition to monetary compensation, you'll want to offer a strong benefits package. Think high-quality health, dental, and vision insurance, as well as plenty of paid maternity and paternity leave, sick leave, and vacation days.

3. The Ability to Learn and Advance

Today's leaders in technical talent want to learn more, advance further, and have truly fulfilling careers. Positions that leave them stagnant are of no interest. Consider how you can help them get what they want. Many companies now provide ongoing education opportunities that they either fully or partially pay for. Education is important to employee and employer alike since technology is always advancing and requires new knowledge. In addition to education, ensure computers, software, and other technologies are always up to date to keep your talent interested in remaining with the company.

4. A Strong Team

Regardless of industry, nobody wants to work with a team of people who only seem to be looking out for themselves. This extends beyond co-workers and up the ladder as well. When hiring people to work for your company, consider their personalities as well as their achievements. If someone seems to think they are smarter or otherwise better than employees, especially anybody they will manage, they're more likely to keep other good employees from wanting to work for you.

5. Overall Integrity

The top tech companies to work for in 2018 were ones with integrity, and this trend will extend to 2019 and beyond. The youngest generation of people entering the work field are concerned with working for businesses that fall in line with their own core values. Most will refuse to work with businesses that always put their financial bottom lines above their employees or the community in which they reside.

Too often, tech companies ask themselves what an employee can bring to their business and don't often enough ask what they are bringing to their employees. If you truly want the best talent working for you, ask yourself what you're doing to ensure that talent wants to be a part of your company.
