ROKU and TCL Team Up For 8K HDR TVs Scheduled to be Launched by the End of 2019

TCL will Launch First ROKU 8K TVs with built in Microphones

LAS VEGAS - CES - 2019, TCL and ROKU jointly announced today that they are working together on the development of 8K HDR TV , consumers can expect them to be available in the market by the end of the year, 2019.

TCL will be the first company to license ROKU’s 8K hardware reference design and manufacture the TV hardware in their own Gen 11 LCD panel factory. ROKU will also upgrade its current 4K and HDR software to provide support for far-field microphones and voice search in the new models.

Introduction of built-in microphones will open new ways to use Google assistant and Amazon Alexa support directly on the new series of TVs. ROKU TVs are already compatible with Google assistant but they need a separate Assistant device to work by using voice commands.

“Together TCL and Roku have delivered millions of smart TVs to consumers across North America that they love to use,” said Chas Smith, General Manager, Roku TV & Players. “In designing and delivering 8K TCL Roku TVs we will reach new heights by offering beautiful picture quality combined with America’s No. 1 TV streaming platform.”

“TCL and Roku have worked together closely for years driving innovation forward to give consumers brilliant picture-quality TVs with the best smart TV OS. As such, TCL’s devices have won numerous awards and we have quickly grown to the #2 brand of smart TVs in the U.S.,” said Chris Larson, Senior Vice President, TCL. “We are thrilled to continue to break boundaries as we plan to build televisions that push the limits of picture quality and offer TV models with built-in voice control.”

ROKU was launched in 2014, and within five years it has become the most licensed TV operating system in the USA. Their hardware reference designs are used by most of the leading OEMs all around the world, during the first three quarters in 2018, every fourth smart TV sold in the USA used ROKU software.

At present, ROKU OS provides consumers access to more than 500,000 movies and TV series through different channels, with easy account management, regular software and channel updates ROKU has become the first choice for different TV manufacturing companies.

As there isn’t much 8K content available to stream, it seems TCL and ROKU will be using some upscaling techniques to upgrade the current 4K videos into the new format. Many other TV manufacturers like LG and Samsung already use upscaling technologies for upgrading 4k videos and they indeed provide a noticeable change in the picture quality.
