HoloLens 2 Reveal

Microsoft appears to be ready to show off HoloLens 2.

Microsoft will finally unveil a new HoloLens. The HoloLens 2 is expected to be unveiled at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona on Feb. 24 at 5 pm CET. Microsoft has announced a press event that will have Microsoft CEO Nadella present as well as Alex Kipman, who is one of the drivers of the HoloLens development.

There is no official confirmation that Microsoft is indeed showing off the HoloLens 2 mixed reality glasses. The whole tech press is assuming it because of Kipman's presence. Microsoft is indirectly confirming HoloLens 2 with an outline about the MWC 2019 Microsoft presence:

1. Get real-time insights and experiences, delivered by highly responsive and contextually aware apps.

2. Deliver break-through business outcomes on a consistent and comprehensive platform.

3. Transform spatial understanding through advanced sensors and AI at the edge to make technology more personal and natural.

4. Leverage Internet of Things to securely collect data, visualize insights, and take actions across cloud and edge.

Microsoft started selling the HoloLens 2 to developers in 2016. Three years later, Microsoft might be now closer to AR glasses that might appeal to consumers. The choice to unveil the HoloLens 2 at the Mobile World Congress 2019 is interesting. There must be some mobile context for the HoloLens 2. Microsoft has not been at the MWC in a big way as Windows Phones failed.

Chinese startups like nreal are pushing the boundaries of AR glasses. Microsoft's HoloLens 2 needs to have a much bigger FOV, contrast and less weight to stay ahead of the competition.

Before the MWC 2019 takes place, the Wearable community meets up in Munich. The Wearable Technologies 2019 Europe will kick off Feb. 3, 2019. I4U News readers get a 20% discount on tickets for the WT Wearable Technologies Conference 2019 with code WT_i4u.
