Barbie and Hot Wheels Toys Push Mattel to Profit

The world's biggest toymaker turned a profit in Q4 of 2018.

Mattel surprised analysts with a profit in Q4 of 2018. Sales of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels toys are mostly responsible. Mattel remains the world's largest toy company according to NPD's ranking. Barbie sales rose 12% and toys sales from the Hot Wheels brand increased by 9%. Earlier this year Mattel announced a live-action Barbie movie starring Margo Robbie. This will help to continue to push Barbie dolls.

The Barbie Dreamhouse and the Hot Wheels Singles 1:64 Assortment are the only two toys in the NPD's top 10 best-selling toys of 2018. The other 8 toys in the top 10 are all from MGA Entertainment. Isaac Larian, CEO of MGA Entertainment said on LinkedIn today that the company grew triple digits in 2018 and will grow double-digit in 2019. Larian forecasts that MGA Entertainment will be the 3rd largest toy company in the US by end of 2019, ranks 4th now.
