Apple Bald Eagle 5G: What is That?

A mysterious Apple trademark filing surfaced.

Nobody expects Apple to be first with 5G handsets. The tech giant is, of course, working on 5G for the iPhone, but the release is not expected in 2019. Now a strange trademark filing surfaced in Europe that as something to do with Apple's 5G activities. Apple filed "Apple Bald Eagle 5G" as a trademark in Benelux in the category Mobile telecommunications network services.

The trademark sounds more like a codename than an actual marketing brand. It could be that Apple is securing the name for its 5G iPhone modem that Apple chip engineers are rumored to work on.

The unusual Apple trademark filing (pdf) was spotted by Dutch tech news site LetsGoDigital (Dutch).

While Samsung is releasing a 5G Galaxy S10 this Spring, Apple is likely skipping 5G in the iPhone 11 this Fall. Apple always waits until new network technology hits critical mass. On the other hand, iPhone sales are under pressure. Maybe its time for Apple to leap to the forefront of smartphone innovation.
