Flashlights have gotten high-tech over the years, and many do more than just shine a light. Check out these tactical flashlights and see which one is the best.

Long ago, in a time before smartphones, floundering humans lit their way through the untamed garages and linen cabinets of the world using flashlights. Today these arcane photon-emitting hand torches are all but extinct, but the strongest have survived. They are the last of their kind: the tactical flashlights.

Okay, so you can still buy a D-cell Mag-Lite at your local hardware store, but it's true that you've probably replaced the household "torch" with your phone. When you need something more powerful for security, extended jaunts into the wilderness or situations where it's not convenient to wave your phone around, you'll want to check out one of these five flashlights.

1. Streamlight TLR-1

Using a conventional round design, the TLR-1 gets the job done with an 800 lumen C4 LED bulb contained in an elegant aircraft aluminum body. We like it for its simple, easy-to-use layout and strong peripheral light, which fits the bill for a weapon-mounted unit like the TLR-1.

2. Anker LC130

Speaking of smartphones, Anker will sell you a new charging cord for yours along with this awesome, cost-effective tactical light. The LC130 sells on Amazon for around $60, so you can keep one in your emergency kit and in your home for regular use. It features a 1300 lumen output, five different lighting modes, a durable texturized exterior and up to eight hours of continuous battery life at full power.

3. Panthervision Flateye

Panthervision is a name that's new in the world of lighting, and they're challenging the status quo. The Flateye offers a powerful LED lighting solution that fits easily in the palm of your hand, provides up to 2100 lumens of light, runs for up to 13 hours and is waterproof. This is a great example of where the industry is heading.

4. Fenix PD35 TAC

With a 1000 lumen output from a CREE LED, the PD35 has become a favorite in this field for its 1000 hour runtime. It's also versatile, with the option to draw power from the rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack or standard lithium batteries. The PD35 also offers a number of useful settings, such as a "momentary on" and a tactical mode for outdoor use.

5. Surefire G2X

A solid performer from a recognized name in the industry, the G2X has a simple tail cap on/off switch and durable sealed anodized aluminum construction. This light offers great ergonomics for use in a self-defense capacity when out on the trail, and its simple shape makes it a snap to drop into one of your cargo pockets or the side pouch of your backpack.

That smartphone might be helpful when you're trying to shed some light on your latest novel, but in a situation where you need to blind an assailant or see half a mile down the trail to make sure things are safe — you'll need something with more power. Invest in one of these high-quality tools made specifically to illuminate your world, and you'll be safer and better equipped for whatever comes your way
