How to Enter and Reset the BIOS on Your Computer

We all know about the BIOS. But do we really know what the BIOS is and what functions it performs?

If you want to find the answer to the question “ What is BIOS?” or learn how to access and configure it, go on reading our tutorial.

What is the BIOS?

The BIOS is an abbreviation standing for the Basic Input Output System. In a nutshell, the BIOS is non-volatile firmware wherewith you can configure your system unit and OS loader. This firmware is located on your motherboard, and for a good reason, since exactly a motherboard ensures interaction and proper operation of all computer components.

Main Functions of the BIOS

As you might have guessed, the main function of the BIOS software is to load the operating system. When you switch on your PC, the microprocessor starts getting the first instructions from the BIOS, which is crucial to start your computer. The BIOS also performs such an important procedure as a power-on self-test. Your BIOS checks on all important hardware components to make sure everything works properly before loading the OS.

Furthermore, the BIOS activates other BIOS chips located on SCSI and video cards. The BIOS also manages peripherals, your monitors, the serial and parallel ports, as well as a collection of settings for hard drives, clock, etc. The BIOS also enables you to set the system time and change the boot order, if necessary.

How to Enter the BIOS?

In order to enter the BIOS configuration, you need to muster up your quickness. Before Windows loads, press the required key on the keyboard, which may vary from computer to computer. Note that you’ll be given only a few seconds to perform this action. If you failed to press the required button or couldn’t figure out what the BIOS access message said, you can either freeze your screen by pressing the Pause key or wait until your comp boots up and restart it to repeat the procedure.

You can control the BIOS using the following buttons:

Arrows help your navigate to different sections within your BIOS and select settings.

Enter enables you to enter a specific section or choose an option.

ESC allows you to exit a section.

How to Reset the BIOS

You may reset your BIOS to restore factory settings or fix some other problems with the BIOS.

You may try resetting it from within the BIOS, first. To do it, restart your computer (or boot it up, if it’s off.)

Wait until the startup screen appears and start pressing the required key to enter setup. Your system may prompt you to press Del, F2, or any other key to enter the setup. You may also need to tap the “F” buttons to access the BIOS. Note that in some cases you may need to press and hold the Fn key prior to tapping the required “F” key.

After your hit the proper key, your BIOS will start loading. Shortly afterwards, you’ll find yourself in the BIOS settings menu, from which you should select the “Setup Defaults,” or “Reset to Default,” option.

Then choose “Load Setup Defaults” and hit the Enter button.

The changes will come into effect as soon as you restart your PC.

After locating the jumper, move it to the other two pins. For example, if the jumper is covering the first and second pins, move it so that it is covering the second and third pins. Make sure to pull the jumper straight up to remove.

It’s also possible to reset your BIOS by removing the CMOS battery. To do it, unplug your PC from any power sources, open your case, and remove the CMOS battery that’s usually located next to your PCI slots. If the battery don’t remove, which is also possible, don’t use force to pull it out. Instead, opt for the “jumper” method outlined above.
