How to Fix Random Reboot on Old Apple iMac

Here is one way to fix an iMac that reboots by itself.

My old 27-inch iMac from Mid 2011 continues to live. After 8 years my iMac powered by 3.4Ghz Core i7, 32GB, 250GB SSD, 2GB HDD and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB GPU is still performant enough for my daily job. In past weeks I encountered the issue that the iMac was randomly rebooting, especially when it was in a cool state.

Most reports say that this random reboots without a system error message or log entry are related to the PSU. The problem did not go away after exchanging the PSU. Also reseating RAM did not help. I did not think that the issue of the random reboots is again the AMD graphics card. I already exchanged it in 2016 and baked the card last year after the screen started to flicker and then the iMac wouldn't reboot. As a last effort I took out the graphics card again and baked it in my oven. My iMac is now running stable again since days.

Again the AMD graphics card was responsible for the iMac hardware failing. So if you encounter random reboots on your iMac without error messages, the graphics could be the cause. Find the instructions and a video how to fix the AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024MB graphics card in an iMac through baking.

Buying a new iMac is a big investment, especially if you go beyond the base configuration. Repairing hardware components makes a lot of sense to protect your investment on the long run.
