Traveling Abroad? Learn How to Use Fire Stick Outside the US

If you are traveling or living abroad and still want to use your Amazon Fire Stick, then be sure to follow these essential tips.

The Fire Stick is one of Amazon’s top-selling products. At just $39.95, this smash hit device plugs into almost any TV and allows you to stream content from Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and other platforms. As a bonus, it comes bundled with Alexa support so you can use voice commands to queue up another episode of The Handmaid’s Tale, add reminders, and more. Best of all, the device and remote are very small, making them the perfect travel accessories. However, if you plan on leaving the US, make sure you follow these key steps so you can always access your favorite content.

Can You Use Fire Stick While Abroad?

The short answer is no – at least not automatically. Once you leave the US, geo-restrictions automatically kick in and shut you out of most content. The Fire Stick does work in a handful of other countries like the UK, Germany, Japan, and Canada, but you’ll have to change your location in your Amazon account. Once you do, however, you won’t be able to use your various subscriptions like Prime Video, HBO Go, or American Netflix. So even in these countries, your access will be severely limited.

The VPN Solution

Fortunately, with a fast VPN, you can work around this problem no matter what country you are in. VPN or virtual private network allows you to connect to a server in a different location. You can choose a US-based server, and your Fire Stick will think you are in the US. You’ll be able to bypass geo-restrictions and access all of your favorite content.

How Do I Find the Right VPN?

When searching for the best VPN for streaming content, the most important factors are speed and geo-restriction bypassing capabilities. With a fast VPN, you shouldn’t notice much difference in internet speed – at most a 5% decrease (click here to find out more). Likewise, look for providers that offer servers in many locations. It’s even better if they have dedicated servers for apps like Netflix and BBC iPlayer. These providers generally have the highest level of functionality and performance.

Using a VPN with a Fire Stick

You have several options for how to use a VPN with the Fire Stick. In some cases, you may want to install it on your router. This will cover any devices connected to the local network, including smartphones and computers. Through this method, you’ll have the added benefits of VPN security features across all your devices.

You can also install a VPN app on your smartphone, create a hotspot, and connect the Fire Stick to it.

Downloading a VPN Directly to Fire Stick

In some cases, you might want to download a VPN directly to the Fire Stick. This is helpful when you can’t control the network, for example, when staying at hotels or if you have limited cellular data. Some VPN apps are available in the Fire Stick app store. Nonetheless, if you have already subscribed to a different VPN provider or have a first generation Fire Stick, you’ll need to download one to your device manually. It’s a simple process that only takes a few minutes. Just follow these steps:

1) Turn on “Allow apps from unknown sources” under the “Developer Options” in device settings.

2) Search and Download the ES Explorer app.

3) Run the app an open the “Download Manager” under “Tools.”

4) Click “+New.”

5) Input your VPN of choice.

6) Select “Download now” and then “Install.”

7) Return to the home screen and click on the app.

8) Sign in and connect to your VPN.

Use Your Fire Stick From Anywhere

Amazon Fire Sticks are amazing devices. With them, you can easily stream your favorite content from so many different platforms. Unfortunately, Fire Sticks only work in the US by default. However, with a VPN, you can spoof your location, thus enabling uninterrupted access to your favorite US shows and apps. Just remember when choosing a VPN, speed is key. So make sure to select a fast VPN. That way, no matter where you are, you’ll never have to wait to enjoy your favorite content
