Apple unveiled the latest watchOS 6 at its Worldwide Developers Conference in California, where it announced a slew of operating system updates for its existing devices, including the iOS 13 and the iPadOS.

Unlike the iPad, which previously ran on the iOS, the Apple Watch has been running on its own operating system since its release in 2015. Apple currently sells four series of the Apple Watch, with the latest one released last September.

About five years after introducing the first Apple Watch, the company has now come out with new features for the wearable device, including new watch faces and an enhanced focus on health and fitness.

“Apple Watch has become an indispensable part of our customers’ everyday lives, from helping users stay connected to the people and information they care about, to inspiring them to live a better and more active day,” Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said in a statement.

Among other things, the watchOS 6 will be able to track women’s menstrual cycles, providing the predicted timing for their next period and fertile window. The data will be integrated into the Health app on the iPhone.

The upgraded Apple Watch will also be installed with a Noise app that will calculate sound levels in environments such as in concerts and sporting events and alert users if the decibel levels are excessive. This way, users could determine if the level of sound in their surroundings could have a negative effect on their hearing.

As with the latest iOS 13 and iPadOS, the new watchOS also advocates privacy. Apple said its smartwatches will not record and save audio or sounds in the environment, only the decibel level samples that are gathered by the Noise app.

The Activity tool on the new watchOS 6, meanwhile, shows trends in users’ activities, such as the levels of calories, the amount of time the user spends doing exercise and the number of steps one has taken while walking. The Activity app offers coaching when it detects a downward trend within 90 days.

Aside from the health and wellness advantages that the new watchOS brings, it now allows the wearer to download apps from the App Store directly on their watch. They can even get Siri to do it. This feature lets Apple developers come up with apps that are made only for the Apple Watch or create a dedicated Apple Watch app that could be linked to an existing app that is able to iPhones and iPads.

The latest Apple Watch update also appeals to users’ aesthetic senses. Apple rolled out new watch faces for the Apple Watch, including a Pride Edition Sport Loop that became available June 2, coinciding with the celebration of Pride Month.

In addition to the Pride edition, Apple will also launch other dynamic watch faces, including one that mimics an analog clock.

Other added features include the new Calculator app and the Voice Memos app that were only previously available to iPhones and iPads. Users will also be able to listen to audiobooks purchased from Apple Books directly on the new Audiobooks app on their watch.
