Has the Future of Video Gaming Arrived? Google Reveals Stadia Launch Details

Google Stadia is up for pre-order.

The future of video gaming was revealed today and it is looking like a console-less, hardware-free world if Google has anything to say about it.

Detailing the underpinnings of their much-anticipated Stadia games streaming service, Google outlined what games are coming and when consumers can expect the service to launch, among other things.

While we’ve known for some time that Google was going to make the Stadia a cloud-based platform, no one quite knew how much it would cost, how it would work, and what the end goal of all of this was.

The service will launch in November 2019 as a Founder’s Edition that is available for preorder from Google right now which will be followed up by a Stadia Base for the rest of the public beginning in 2020.

The only hardware associated with the Stadia is a $69 controller that connects via Wifi and acts as the central hub for everything you do on Stadia. Google offers a special $129 Stadia Founders Edition package now for pre-order online in the Google Store. The Stadia Founders Edition includes a limited Edition Night Blue Stadia Controller and a Chromecast Ultra to connect and play games via Stadia on your TV.

One of the biggest concerns that gamers had about the Stadia is that lag would make certain types of games - read fighting games and racing titles - almost unplayable as these require quick, lightning-fast button presses making any amount of lag whatsoever a game breaking feature.

Aside from accessing games and such from the controller you can also capture and record footage as well as access Internet functions via Google’s voice-activated suite of services.

The launch version of the Stadia will include a special controller color, a Chromecast Ultra device, a three month subscription to Stadia Pro and also one for a friend.

Naturally, as a founding member, you will also be able to choose your Stadia account name.

The two-tiered subscription system consists of a Base and a Pro level. At the Base level, you will be able to buy and keep games in your library as well as access them anywhere that is capable of running a Chrome browser.

Stadia Pro is the $10 per month subscription service that gives you access to a library of free games, discounts on new games, and streaming in ultra-high resolution.

According to Gamespot, Stadia will launch in the following nations US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland with more coming in 2020. Additionally, there will be thirty-something titles available at launch with some as-yet-unannounced games from industry stalwarts like Capcom, EA, and even Rockstar.

As many analysts are quick to point out, the success (or failure) of Stadia as a concept will be closely watched by industry titans like Sony and Microsoft.

Both banking on some kind of streaming strategy for their next gen consoles, these tech companies are probably looking at Stadia from a technical and feasibility standpoint more than anything else.

Many skeptics have pointed out that Google’s track record with launching new services is less than ideal and the impact this reputation has on the success of Stadia remains to be seen.
