Google in Trouble: Report Suggests Xiaomi, Vivo Mulling Over Ditching Android for Huawei Mobile OS

A new report from Global Times says that major Chinese mobile companies are testing Huawei's HongMeng, which is allegedly 60% faster than Android.

The trade war between the United States and China is about to turn ugly as a reaction from the Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies seems impending.

A new report from Global Times claims that key mobile companies including Xiaomi, Oppo, Tencent and Vivo are testing Huawei’s own mobile operating system. The OS, dubbed “HongMeng,” is reportedly 60% faster than the standard Android OS.

While the performance claim is unsubstantiated, it is clear that the Chinese mobile giants have an intention to throw their weight behind China in the current trade war that is expected to cost a whopping $445 billion in lost output, according to the IMF.

The biggest victim of the possible reaction from the Chinese mobile companies is going to be Google. According to industry research firm Nomura Instinet, Google will lose close to $425 million in annual revenue due to the Huawei ban. Over 500 million Huawei smartphone users around the world lost access to play store and Google services within days. Just last year, Huawei shipped over 200 million phones having Android OS in them. Google will no longer be able to make money from its Play Store services, ads, search or apps from any of these devices.

But bigger losses for Google are on the horizon if Chinese mobile companies decide to go with Huawei’s OS in the future. For instance, Xiaomi, with over 27 million shipments in the first quarter, is a major player in China. The company is a market leader in india, with about 9.1 million shipments in just the first quarter of 2019. Similarly, Vivo and Oppo have 7.5% and 7.4% market share, respectively.

If these companies decide to ditch Android for HongMeng, Google will suffer devastating revenue losses.
