Sprint's Tracker has almost twice as much battery power as Verizon's recently launched Smart Locator.

Less than a week after Verizon officially launched its tracker device called the "Verizon Smart Locator," its rival, Sprint, has followed suit with its own LTE-powered tracking gadget that is straightforwardly called "Tracker."

The Tracker, which is manufactured for Sprint by Coolpad, is about the same size as a matchbox and weighs 1.76 ounces. It runs on Qualcomm MDM9207-1 and has Linux 3.18 as its operating system. Unlike Verizon’s $100 Smart Locator, Sprint’s device is available for purchase on Sprint.com at $2.50 per month for 24 months, plus an additional $5 per month for its connection. AT&T’s "SmartThings Tracker," in collaboration with Samsung, costs $99 with AT&T service for the first year, and $5 a month, or $50 annually, for AT&T service thereafter.

Sprint’s Tracker has a battery capacity of 760mAh. The company did not specify how long the device can stay on standby, but it is still almost twice as powerful as Verizon Smart Locator’s 400mAh Li-Ion battery, which can last for up to five days. The Verizon-Samsung SmartThings Tracker listing on the Samsung online store, on the other hand, does not specify the battery power, but the specifications online shows that the device can stay on for up to 10 days.

Meanwhile, Sprint Tracker offers real-time tracking information and personalized alerts to smartphones and tablets. The lightweight device can be attached like a keychain to kids’ backpacks, bicycle, car, camera, luggage or any object the users want to track for real-time monitoring. It can also be bought with a separately sold dog-collar to help pet owners track their dogs.

Among other features, the tracking device is water resistant and has a built-in sensor detection. It also tracks historical data, allowing a user to view certain locations where the Tracker device was located at a certain time.

Users can track the device’s location through the Safe & Sound app, which alerts them if the Tracker moves outside a set proximity. This is useful for pet owners as the Safe & Sound app comes with a custom geo-fence and set safety area, alerting them when their pets leave the safety area.

The Safe & Sound app also helps users locate the device easily, especially when it is attached to a misplaced set of keys or other valuable items. A press of the Ring button from the app triggers the Tracker, which then makes a sound to help the owner locate it.

The app is available for on Android and iOS devices. Every purchase of Sprint’s Tracker comes with a lanyard, a travel adapter, USB cable and the usual quick start guide.
