The company will replace affected batteries for free.

Apple has issued a voluntary recall of some older-generation 15-inch MacBook Pros over concerns that their batteries could overheat, increasing the risk of a fire, the company said in a notice.

The company did not disclose the number of units involved in the recall, but said MacBook Pro (15-inch, Retina, Mid-2015) models sold between September 2015 and February 2017 are included. Customers can visit the Apple website and enter their laptop’s serial number to check if their devices are subject to the recall.

Apple is urging customers whose laptops are covered in the recall to stop using the devices and follow the instructions on its website to have their batteries replaced, free of charge.

The devices will be sent to an Apple Repair Center, where the laptops will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program. The service may take one to two weeks, the company said. Apple is also encouraging affected users to back up their data prior to having the batteries replaced.

The tech giant stressed that other MacBook Pro outside the covered dates are not affected in the notice. It added that the recall does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the 15-inch MacBook Pro.
