The device will run on Windows Core OS, specifically designed for dual display user interface.

Microsoft’s secret foldable device under its Surface line of touchscreen devices will likely run Android apps and iCloud service in its Windows 10 operating system, according to a market research firm.

The tech giant has been secretly developing a new dual-screen device that is tipped to be a tablet-laptop hybrid. I4U earlier reported, citing The Verge, that Microsoft showed off a prototype of the device, codenamed “Centaurus,” to its employees.

Most recently, market research firm IHS Markit told Forbes that the foldable device will have two 9-inch screens with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The firm’s Consumer Electronics Associate Director Jeff Lin revealed the details to the news outlet.

However, the new Surface device is expected to roll out in the first quarter or the first half of 2020, later than the anticipated release of within six months from June.

IHS Markit reportedly said that Centaurus will use the new version of Windows 10, called Windows Core OS, which is specifically designed for dual display user interface. The device will also adopt Intel 10 nanometer system-on-a-chip Lakefield. Additionally, the dual-screen tablet-laptop hybrid will have LTE or 5G connectivity, the firm revealed.

The news comes as smartphone makers are racing to officially release their foldable phones this year, with Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies leading the race.

I4U recently reported that the Huawei Mate X is set to hit the markets in about three months. Huawei is at risk of losing its partnership with Google amid an impending ban in the U.S. This could result to Huawei losing access to Google’s Android operating system, risking sales of its first ever foldable phone.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also rumored to launch its Galaxy Fold in July, about three months after its original target release in April.

Apart from Huawei and Samsung, Motorola is also reported to be relaunching its popular Razr brand with a new handset. Other runners-up in the foldable smartphone race include LG, TCL, Apple, Sony, Royole FlexPai, Xiaomi, Google, Oppo, Vivo and even battery maker Energizer, according to Techradar.
