A company spokesperson said the feature is being developed in partnership with Facebook's well-being team.

Facebook is testing a new feature that would allow its users to opt between getting or not getting the red notification badges on its app.

If confirmed, the tool would let users get rid of those pesky little red dots that almost always lures people to click on them to check updates about likes and reactions on their photos and statuses, responses to photos or posts they commented on, and almost every interaction on the social media platform.

Some, however, find them useful, especially with those who are awaiting a career-related update, a birthday or anniversary reminder, and for other reasons.

Facebook’s potential new tool is currently under development, and was first spotted by technology blogger and white hat hacker Jane Manchun Wong. Wong is most notably known as among the first few people to try out Facebook’s new Dating feature before it was officially rolled out. She also recently revealed new Twitter and Spotify updates on her Twitter account.

Hong Kong-based Wong posted a photo of Facebook’s upcoming “Notification Dots” options on Twitter, which would let users choose between toggling on or off the notification badges for groups, the Marketplace, their profile or other menu-related updates.

Social media industry commentator Matt Navarra also spotted the potential change. On his Twitter page, Navarra posted screenshots of a “Mute Push Notifications” option and a “Notification Dots” section.

Meanwhile, a Facebook spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the social media giant — which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp — that the feature is “related to the work we’re doing with the well-being team.”

“We’re thinking about how people spend their time in the app and making sure that it’s time well spent... People don’t necessarily want to see a notification on the badge [the in-app dots on tabs] if they’re already getting notifications in the jewel [the red counter on the Facebook app icon on your phone’s homescreen],” the spokesperson said.

As soon as it rolls out, the feature can be accessed by going on the Menu tab > Settings & Privacy > Settings > Notifications > Notification Dots.
