MeshTalk can bypass servers and base stations, allowing for added security.

Chinese smart phone maker Oppo has unveiled a new communications solution that will allow users to send messages and call other users within a three-kilometer radius.

The technology, dubbed “MeshTalk,” is reminiscent of the old-school walkie-talkie that people within a short distance use to talk to one another. On Twitter, Oppo said the technology works even without WiFi, Bluetooth or cellular data.

Oppo introduced MeshTalk at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. The company said the technology does not need base stations or other servers, giving users a higher sense of privacy.

Meanwhile, Gizmochina reported that with MeshTalk, users can also opt to “create an ad hoc local area network (LAN) that allows for the creation of group chats and also helps to expand the communication range via a signal relay.”

The company has yet to disclose the official release date for the walkie-talkie-like feature, but Gizmochina said it could only be available to newer Oppo phone models since MeshTalk uses a chip, a hardware component.

Oppo’s announcement comes shortly after it introduced its revolutionary under-screen camera technology, which has created quite a buzz online. As leading smartphone brands work towards creating the smallest camera notch possible to make use of a full screen display, Oppo has come out with its under-screen camera that somewhat hides from a user’s view when it is not in use.

The on-screen camera follows Oppo's groundbreaking Oppo Find X, whose camera pops out from the phone's body. The camera is only seen when it is used.
