The MMO game will be available for PC and consoles.

Amazon’s gaming arm, Amazon Game Studios, is adding a new online video game to its portfolio with a new partnership with Los Angeles-based Athlon Games to jointly develop a free-to-play “Lord of the Rings” multiplayer game.

The move comes as Amazon was recently reported to have quietly laid off dozens of game developers during the E3, or Electronic Entertainment Expo, last month.

Most recently, TechCrunch reported that Amazon Game Studios will contribute in the development of the Lord of the Rings game for PC and consoles. Amazon will also market and publish the upcoming game across global markets, except China.

As announced by Athlon Games in September last year, the game will be set in the world of Middle-earth at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings. Athlon said the characters in the game will include people and creatures that have never been seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.

The idea for the game started when Athlon secured a long-term licensing agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises, which owns the global exclusive rights to certain elements of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit novels.

“We’re committed to bringing customers games of the highest quality, both with our own original IP as well as beloved cultural pillars like The Lord of the Rings… Tolkien’s Middle-earth is one of the richest fictional worlds in history, and it gives our team of experienced MMO developers — from the same studio developing New World — tremendous opportunity to play and create. We have a strong leadership team in place to helm this new project, and we’re actively growing our team to help build this incredible experience,” Amazon Game Studios Vice President Christoph Hartmann said in a statement.

If completed, the game will be Amazon’s second console game following the release of The Grand Tour Game for the Xbox One and for the PlayStation 4 last year.

Amazon has yet to announce an official release about the partnership, as well as the expected release date of the Lord of the Rings MMO.
