Best Tips For Instant Mac Lock

If you are wondering how to lock a Mac, first of all, it is important to grasp the difference between locking it and simply putting its screen to sleep. Although many users don’t see a big difference between these two actions, there is one big distinctive feature to keep in mind. When just putting your device to sleep, you don’t really lock it, which means it won’t ask you to unlock it with a touch ID or password when you open it. Screen lock, on the contrary, requires having a password in order to get back to work. In this article, we are going to give you a few simple hints on how to do this, so let’s get to it!

What Do You Need To Do First?

We have already explained the difference between sleeping mode and full lock. Now, we have to point out another important thing. Since unlocking your Mac requires using a Touch ID or password, you first need to set it up.

Here, we are not going to focus on setting up your Touch ID, but here is a small guide on how to set up a password if you haven’t yet:

  1. Go to System Preferences from your PC

  2. Navigate to the section called Security & Privacy

  3. Then go to General > Require Password…

  4. In the dropdown menu, choose the timing for screen lock after which the system will require entering a password (we recommend picking the immediate lock option for safety)

After you go through these steps, each time you put the system to sleep, it will lock up and require authentication for further access.

Easy Hacks For Quick Lock

If you don’t know this yet, there are quite many methods that allow users to lock their Macs. Some of them can be called pretty confusing and complicated, which is why we are not going to focus on them. Instead, we are going to point out some of the easiest and yet effective ways.

Our first and main tip would be to simply close it. Without any doubt, this is the quickest method, so we recommend everyone to use it. Simply shutting the lid you automatically put the system to sleep and, if you have your password set up, it will lock automatically as well.

What if you need your computer to be open but protected from the third-party eyes? In this case, we recommend you to use one of the following tips:

  • Shortcuts – all Mac models come with a pre-established set of shortcuts aimed at making your experience with the device simple and convenient. There are certain shortcuts for the instant lock as well. For example, if your system is running on Mojave OS, try using a combination of Cmd+Control+Q keys. If you have an older version, Control+Shift+Power should work as well.

  • Hot corners – users can set up hot corners pretty much for any action, so using this opportunity for the instant lock will be a good idea. To create a new hot corner, a user needs to find a tab called Desktop & Screen Saver in the System Preferences. There you will see the Hot Corners button. Click on it to set up a sleep shortcut.

  • Menu – finally, users can lock their Macs right from the main menu by pressing the Sleep button. This will automatically take you back to the login screen and require entering a password for further access.

Finally, there are many other tips and tricks that can help you make the best use of your Apple devices! All these tips are collected at OSxtips, so be sure to check it out!
