The co-developed image sensor could soon see smartphones producing the same quality of pictures as that of DSRL cameras.

Samsung is planning to regain its dominance in the camera category for smartphones as it introduced its 108 megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX, which the company describes as the first mobile image sensor in the smartphone industry to exceed 100 million pixels.

The South Korean tech giant has partnered with Xiaomi, a Chinese consumer electronics company that also produces smartphones to create the 108mp image sensor that accordingly has the same resolution as a high-end DSLR camera.

“For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones,” Lin Bin, co-founder and president of Xiaomi, said in a statement.

Samsung and Xiaomi did not disclose whether both companies are planning to integrate the new image sensors in their latest line of smartphones and whether they are offering it to other smartphone makers.

The latest announcement comes just five months after Samsung introduced its 64 megapixel ISOCELL Bright GW1 and 48Mp ISOCELL Bright GM2 image sensors for smartphones.

Samsung said ISOCELL Bright HMX is able to produce extremely sharp photos that are rich in detail even in extreme lighting conditions as the HMX can absorb more light in low-lit settings than smaller sensors. Samsung added that the sensor can imitate big-pixel sensors in producing 27Mp images through its pixel-merging Tetracell technology.

The HMX also has a Smart-ISO feature that automatically switches to a low ISO in bright environments in order to produce pictures with reduced noise.

The new image sensor also boasts the ability to shoot videos without losing field-of-view at resolutions of up to 6K at 30-frames-per-second.

“Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology,” Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, said.
