The most popular social media app is getting closer to the dark side.

Facebook could soon offer a dark mode option for its mobile app for iOS and Android devices, similar to the option that is already available for Facebook’s Messenger app.

White hat hacker and technology blogger Jane Manchun Wong revealed the under-development feature on her blog. Wong was most noted for one of the early users to try out Facebook’s dating feature before it was officially rolled out. She also continues to give updates on upcoming changes to other popular social media sites like Twitter.

In her latest discovery, Wong said she looked at the code underneath Facebook’s mobile app and noticed that Facebook is slowly implementing dark mode features to its mobile app.

At the moment, Facebook is only applying the feature to certain parts of the app like placing dark text on a dark background.

Wong’s revelation comes about five months after users started to unlock Messenger’s dark mode option via a fun emoji Easter egg - a moon!

Facebook’s potential introduction comes as more smartphone apps like Twitter, Google Maps, Feedly, Pocket and even Telegram now offer a dark mode feature to help protect users’ eyes from harsh screen light in dimly lit environments.

In June, Apple has also highlighted a new dark mode option for its upcoming iOS 13. iPhones users will soon be able to choose dark mode to make their screen feel easier on the eyes.

Facebook has yet to release an announcement, but we'll definitely keep an eye out.
