The company has opened a TV naming competition a year ago.

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus is foraying into the television space with its plan to launch its own portfolio of smart TVs to be called “OnePlus TV”.

The announcement was unveiled by the company on Twitter with a link that pointed to the company’s own community forum. OnePlus Community consultant dsmonteiro said the debut of the OnePlus TV brand comes almost a year after the company posted its TV naming competition in the forum.

“Yes, we are going to call our very first smart TV product "OnePlus TV" – simple yet to-the-point – as we believe there's no other name that can best represent our value, vision and pride than naming it with our own brand,” dsmonteiro said.

The company did not delve into the specifics of its own range of smart TVs and has instead explained why it chose the branding and the logo.

As dsmonteiro explains, the logo design shows a gap between the “+" and the logo edge is twice as wide as the ne between the "+" and the letter "T", which is also twice as the one between "T" and "V".

The OnePlus representative said the company took inspiration from the classic geometric progression that can be seen in classic art forms, such the ancient Hindu symbol, the mandala, and the famous ancient Greek temple, Heraion of Argos.

Dsmonteiro added that OnePlus’ move to keep its logo while barely adding the TV word for OnePlus TV is because it intends to keep its OnePlus branding.

“‘One’ represents ‘at the moment’ and ‘Plus’ means endless possibilities for the future,” dsmonteiro noted.

The company did not say when it intends to give out more details into OnePlus TV.

OnePlus’ foray into the TV market is a sign that the Shenzhen-based company is looking to become a producer of a wide array of consumer electronic items like what Samsung Electronics, Huawei and Xiaomi does.
