What’s All the Fuss About RAID: Shadow Legends?

For some time, hardcore role-playing gamers have been searching for a fantastical RPG that they could immerse themselves in for hours on end. Thankfully, the launch of Plarium Games’ RAID: Shadow Legends appears to have filled the void. The mobile-exclusive game was released to Android and iOS users at the turn of the New Year, with Plarium’s ever-growing community of mobile gamers reacting positively on the whole.

Let’s take a look inside the dynamics of RAID: Shadow Legends and see whether it really is worth all the fanfare and hype:

What’s the storyline?

The game’s story campaign begins with you stood alongside four “champions” – we’ll go into more detail about them shortly – before watching each of them die. The final champion yells “For the Arbiter!” before falling to his death. The Arbiter eventually appears on-screen and asks you to choose one of the four champions that died before you.

The Arbiter reveals that it is her quest to be the guardian of the world that is in grave danger of being destroyed by war and general discord. The Arbiter allows you to bring back one of the four fallen champions to fight alongside you.

Gameplay review

Once you’ve selected your first champion to stand side by side with you in battle, you’ll start the game in the Bastion, which you should consider to be your home “base”. It’s here where you’ll plan your teams, line up your champions and level up on skills and weaponry etc.

Aside from the power of the Mystery Shards, which can appear to summon “uncommon” and “rare” champions to your new-look army, the champions themselves are a fundamental aspect of RAID: Shadow Legends. In fact, there are more than 300 champions waiting to be unlocked in RAID: Shadow Legends. You can not only collect new champions for your army through Shards, you can also collect them by completing specific battles in the campaign mode.

The champions are ranked in their rarity from grey (least rare) through to gold (most rare). The gold champions bring battle-changing abilities to the table, with powerful base statistics to give you a solid platform to attack from.

Understanding combat games in RAID: Shadow Legends

There are five different types of combat you will encounter during your campaign mode:

  • Arena

  • Dungeons

  • Campaign

  • Clan Boss

  • Faction Wars

During the storyline, you’ll go through various stages, each rising with difficulty, but the end of each stage culminates in an adrenaline-fuelled boss fight. Before every combat you encounter, you are given the chance to assess the enemy champions you will come up against and hand-pick your own champions to try and combat their skills and weaknesses.

Think of the champion skills as being something akin to Rock, Paper Scissors:

Magic beats Spirit, Spirit beats Force and Force beats Magic (Magic > Spirit > Force > Magic)

Visual appearance of RAID: Shadow Legends

Visually, RAID: Shadow Legends is virtually flawless. It performs well on all mobile devices and the game is designed to be played in a full 3D environment. If you want the game to run as smoothly as possible, your mobile device should have a minimum of 2GB of RAM installed and at least 100MB of storage space in your mobile’s memory.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that this game is one of the most immersive fantasy RPGs to have been released on mobile this year. Although the game is still in its infancy, there are lots of customizations available already to keep you interested and there’s sure to be add-on content released in due course.
