Hasbro is buying Peppa Pig owner in latest entertainment push

The deal could soon see Hasbro making Peppa Pig-themed toys and TV shows.

Hasbro, the maker of Play-Dohs, Nerf blasters and My Little Pony plush toys, has agreed to acquire Entertainment One, or eOne, the company that owns the rights to Peppa Pig, for a whopping $4 billion.

Peppa Pig has achieved global phenomenon among preschoolers with over hundreds of episodes and over millions of Peppa Pig-inspired merchandise sold globally.

According to Hasbro, it expects to benefit from eOne’s appeal to preschoolers. The toymaker said the acquisition of highly profitable and merchandisable preschool brands is one of the company’s strategic growth opportunities.

The acquisition of eOne would soon see Hasbro having the exclusive rights to manufacture Peppa Pig-themed toys and other merchandise. The announcement comes just days after Hasbro announced that it will phase out all plastic packaging from its categories by the end of 2022.

Meanwhile, the deal with eOne would also mark Hasbro’s latest attempt to grow its entertainment business after launching Hasbro Studios in 2009. The unit, which does business as Allspark, is behind TV shows such as the My Little Pony series and the TV series Transformers: Prime. Many of Hasbro’s shows are based on the company’s toys.

Allspark’s shows are broadcast on the Discovery Family television network, a joint venture between Hasbro and Discovery.

“The acquisition of eOne adds beloved story-led global family brands that deliver strong operating returns to Hasbro’s portfolio and provides a pipeline of new brand creation driven by family-oriented storytelling, which will now include Hasbro’s IP,” Hasbro Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner said.

Hasbro’s finance chief, Deborah Thomas, also came out to say: “eOne’s brands and TV and film expertise, together with Hasbro’s brands, toy and game innovation and licensing capabilities, positions us to more quickly drive revenue and profit over the medium-term.”
