Nintendo Switch Lite vs Nintendo Switch: Which one is best for you?

In the battle of the two Nintendos, which one is game over for you?

Like the rest of the gaming world, we’re just as excited as you are for the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo’s solution to long hours of gaming that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere.

The Switch Lite is set to hit the shelves on September 20, but pre-orders have already commenced on a number of online stores including Walmart.com, GameStop, as well as Amazon.com. They come in three different variants:

Nintendo Switch Lite Gray

Nintendo Switch Lite Turquoise

Nintendo Switch Lite Yellow

There's also a limited edition called the Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian and Zamazenta variant, to mark the upcoming release of the Pokémon Sword and Shield RPG games in November. As everyone knows, Pokemon is one of the proprietary games of Nintendo, which has gained such a huge following.

All the Nintendo Switch Lite variants cost $199.99, $100 cheaper than its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch.

For Nintendo Switch users, you might be wondering if the Nintendo Switch Lite is an attractive upgrade. For those who are just starting to embrace the Nintendo life, we have come up with some of the pros and cons to help you pick out the best Nintendo console for you.

PRICING

In terms of the price, the Switch Lite is definitely the only way to go because it’s $100 cheaper at just $199.99, compared to the Switch, which still retails at $299.99.

SIZE AND WEIGHT

At 3.6” high, 8.2” long and 0.55” deep, the Switch Lite is a mini-version of the Switch that measures 4” high, 9.4” long and 0.55” deep with the Joy-Con attached. If you’re looking for something that’s bigger than a standard smartphone, you should go with the Nintendo Switch. But if you want something that’s more compact when you’re travelling or when you just want to kill time while you’re outside, then go with the Switch Lite. Both devices feature touchscreen displays.

With the Switch Lite, you’ll never get tired of playing for hours because it’s lightweight at just 0.61 lbs, versus the Switch, which weighs about 0.88 lbs.

PLAY MODES

Because it’s built for the handheld gaming revolution, the Switch Lite only supports handheld mode, meaning you cannot enjoy the same experiences that you’re getting with the Nintendo Switch. The Switch supports handheld mode, tablet mode when you detach the Joy-Con controllers and TV mode, letting you and your friends screen the game via your TV sets.

Since it doesn’t support TV gaming, the Nintendo Switch Lite does not come with its own dock and is not compatible with the Switch’s dock. The dock is used to connect the Switch to your TV via a HDMI cable or kickstand.

BATTERY LIFE

The consoles’ battery life is perhaps the most contested specification when choosing between the Switch Lite and the Switch. The Switch Lite is specifically designed for travelling, which is why it’s practically built with a bigger battery capacity. The upcoming console lets gamers play nonstop for approximately 3 to 7 hours, while the Switch’s battery only lasts 2.5 to 6.5 hours. Note that the battery life still depends on the games you play.

GAMES

The Switch Lite is limited to games that support handheld mode, whereas the Nintendo Switch offers all the games that are compatible the Switch. However, you can expect that Nintendo will soon start to develop Switch Lite-compatible games soon. Game developers will also seek to make this possible because of the expected influx of Nintendo Switch Lite users as soon as it rolls out.

Both devices support access to the Nintendo eShop, where players can purchase digital versions of video games. To find out if the games that you want can be played on the Switch Lite, just look for the handheld mode icon:

All in all, both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite are great consoles. If you spend more time outdoors, at school or at work, the Switch Lite is the one for you as it's compact and offers the best battery life. If you're looking for the best gaming experience at home or to share with friends, then go with the Nintendo Switch.

Pre-order the Switch Lite via Walmart.com, GameStop or Amazon.com. The Nintendo Switch is also available on Amazon.com.
