Garmin unveils its new GPS multisport smartwatch, the fēnix 6

This new series is the first to offer solar charging across Garmin’s whole lineup.

Just a day after Fitbit debuted its new Alexa-compatible smartwatch, the Fitbit Versa 2, another leader in the wearable technology space has also come out with a new addition to its smartwatch offerings.

Garmin, who was at the forefront of the intelligent watches scene before it went mainstream, has lifted the curtains on its new smartwatches, the Garmin fēnix 6 and fēnix 6X.

It comes as the company faces a tough battle against smartphone makers Apple and Samsung, which have also forayed into smartwatches in recent years with the Apple Watch and the Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch.

Garmin’s fēnix 6 series is part of the watch maker’s flagship GPS multisport smartwatch lineup. The fēnix 6 and 6X are specifically designed for adventure, the company said.

Both feature a tool called Power Manager for longer battery life. The fēnix 6, meanwhile, features a new energy-generating technology that’s a first for Garmin: solar charging. The fēnix 6X Pro Solar model is packed with a transparent solar charging lens that harnesses energy from the sun to extend the watch’s battery life.

In terms of display, Garmin said the fēnix 6X Pro Solar has the largest round display yet from the company. It has a large 1.4” sunlight-readable display, which is 36% bigger than the previous fēnix 5X models.

The Garmin fēnix 6X also offers activities suggestions, training features, color mapping, music streaming and more.

Meanwhile, the fēnix 6 Pro and Sapphire are also multisport GPS watches that feel more comfortable on the wrist. Their display measures 1.3" and 1.4" respectively. With the new variants, Garmin has introduced new QuickFit nylon bands and silicone colors.

Both the fēnix 6X and fēnix 6 sport the PaceProfeature for runners. This technology helps them keep their pacing strategy on track. The fēnix 6 series also comes with a wrist-based heart rate feature.

All the new fēnix 6 variants are now available on Amazon.com, with prices starting at $599.99.
