Apple introduces always-on display on the new Apple Watch Series 5

The latest Apple Watch starts at $399.

Apple has just officially unveiled the Apple Watch Series 5, its latest line of smartwatches. It’s packed with a couple of good features that we’re seeing for the first time on an Apple Watch.

The biggest announcement as Apple drew the curtains back on the Apple Watch Series 5 is its Always-On display option that makes the wearable device feel like an actual watch, only smarter.

The Always-On Retina display on the Apple Watch Series 5 never sleeps, making it easier for users to check the time and other significant information that they want to see on the face of their watch without having to raise or tap the display.

A lot of users may be worried about the watch’s battery life when they choose to enable the Always-On feature. However, Apple said the new series continues to offer an all-day 18-hour battery life.

“Each watch face has been carefully optimized for the new display and to preserve battery life, the screen intelligently dims when a user’s wrist is down and returns to full brightness with a raise or a tap,” Apple said.

Aside from that big change, the Apple Watch Series 5 now has an even better navigation capability as it comes with the new built-in compass and updated Maps app that allows users to see which way they are facing. The Compass app offers essential navigation information including heading, incline, latitude, longitude and current elevation. This is perfect for users who are always on the go, including travelers and adventure seekers.

Apple also made international emergency calling possible with the new Apple Watch. Users can now make international calls to emergency services, regardless of where the device was originally purchased or if the cellular plan has been turned on. This new emergency feature also works when users enable the device to detect falls. The watch automatically places an emergency call if the watch senses the user has taken a hard fall and remains motionless for about a minute. This revolutionary feature makes it the perfect watch for mountain climbers.

Apple’s announcement also confirmed that the new Apple Watch Series 5 will come in aluminum, stainless steel, ceramic and an all-new titanium finish. Earlier, we reported about this possibility, which was uncovered through leaked assets.

The Series 5 will come in 44mm and 40mm case variants, both at 10.7mm thin. In the U.S., it starts at $399 for the GPS version and $499 for the GPS + Cellular version. Apple has cut the price of the popular Series 3 to just $199 for the GPS and $299 for the GPS + Cellular version.

Apple still offers all of its previous Apple Watch models at a discount. Check them all out here.

The Apple Watch Series 5 is now available for pre-order on Apple.com before it becomes available for purchase across retail outlets in the U.S. and other markets from September 20.

The new Apple Watches were unveiled alongside the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, as well as the seventh-generation iPad.
