Amazon unveils Amazon Music HD, offering high quality, lossless audio

The tech behemoth is offering a 90-day free trial for the new music service.

Amazon is more than just a shopping site. The tech giant wants to prove that by releasing a suite of offerings as it aims to become a one-stop shop for everything.

Over the years, the company has launched its own streaming services for both video and music. Despite being faced with bigger competitions against companies who are solely offering one particular service, Amazon continues to make changes to its apps and services and offer attractive perks in a bid to lure more users and subscribers.

In the music streaming space, Amazon’s bigger rivals are Spotify and Apple Music. These two have been neck and neck, giving subscribers various offerings to pirate them from each other’s platforms.

Now, Amazon is joining in on the race by launching its new service under Amazon Music. It’s called Amazon Music HD and it promises the “highest quality audio” for streaming.

Monthly subscription for Amazon Music HD will be $12.99 for Prime members, $14.99 for Amazon customers, or an additional $5 a month for current subscribers. Amazon is also offering a 90-day free trial for individuals who haven’t tried signing up to Amazon Music yet.

With Amazon Music HD, customers can get access to more than 50 million songs in High Definition, with a bit depth of 16 bits and a sample rate of 44.1kHz, similar to the quality of audio in CDs, plus millions of songs in Ultra High Definition, which Amazon describes as “the highest quality streaming audio available.” The company said the Ultra HD audio quality reveals nuances that were once flattened in files compressed for digital streaming. Ultra HD will have a bit depth of 24 bits and a sample rate of up to 192 kHz.

Here’s how Amazon Music HD compares with other streaming platforms, according to Amazon:

The new music streaming service is compatible with PCs, iOS and Android devices, select Echo devices, Fire TV, and Fire Tablets.

Amazon Music HD is now available to stream in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Japan.
