Amazon now lets US customers pay in cash

Amazon offers more payment options to those without a debit or credit card.

Amazon.com is giving its customers in the U.S. a new payment option when they checkout their orders online. It’s called Amazon PayCode and it’s now live.

Amazon PayCode is different from Amazon Cash that allows customers to load cash into their Amazon Balance, which they use for online purchases. Instead, Amazon PayCode will let them checkout and pay for their purchases in cash at any Western Union location by presenting a QR code and a number. As soon as the payment is made, Amazon will automatically ship the order.

Customers who opt to pay via PayCode will have 24 hours after the order is placed to make the payment. For returns, customers will receive a cash refund at a participating Western Union location.

Note that when making payments, Western Union agents will ask for your ID apart from the QR code that Amazon generates from your order. Your ID must match the information on your Amazon account.

PayCode has been available in 19 countries outside the U.S., especially in markets where there are still unbanked customers, or people who don’t have bank accounts or credit cards.

The service was launched in February in partnership with Western Union. With the addition of the U.S., PayCode is now available in the following countries and regions: Barbados, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Federated States of Micronesia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Palau, Peru, Philippines, Kenya, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, and Uruguay.

Separately, Amazon said its Amazon Cash service is now available in over 100,000 cash-loading locations in the U.S. Amazon Cash acts as a wallet that customers can load up before they make online purchases. Amazon has partner locations where customers can load up their Amazon Cash by simply presenting their mobile phone number. Funds are made available in real time.
