This calculator tells you the climate impact of your groceries

A climate calculator is the best tool to help you offset your carbon emissions.

Following waves of #ClimateStrike across the globe to protest against governmental inaction towards climate change and the detrimental effects of pollution in the planet, a Finnish retailer has unveiled an app that is able to calculate the carbon footprint in your shopping basket.

The calculator is called “Omat ostot," which means "My Purchases," and it's found inside the S-mobiili app of Finland-based retailer S Group.

The app was developed by S Group in partnership with experts at Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The group is still continuing to develop and polish the calculator app, but as soon as it launches, it will help consumers determine the magnitude of the climate impact of different products, such as fast-moving consumer goods, that may be purchased in grocery stores.

The carbon footprint counter by S Group will allow customers to track the carbon footprint of their shopping cart on a monthly and yearly basis. The calculator assesses the climate impact of food groups, instead of individual products. For example, the value used to calculate one milk can is calculated based on the carbon footprint of the whole milk product group.

S Group promises that the calculator will deliver "sufficient accuracy," to help customers cut down on their carbon footprint.

"The calculator is a consumer friendly way of highlighting the climate impact of your shopping basket and bringing it closer to your everyday life," the company said.

According to S Group, the team took into account the origin of the best selling products, such as greenhouse vegetables.

There's no word yet on when the Omat ostot calculator will be launched in Finland, but it is expected to start a trend and push other global retail giants to follow suit to contribute to saving the planet.

Currently, there's a carbon footprint calculator online by Carbon Footprint Ltd. that lets you calculate the carbon emissions from your house, your car or motorbike and the bus or train or the flights you take.

According to NASA, the evidence for rapid climate change is seen by the alarming global temperature rise, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, glacial retreat, decreased snow cover, sea level rise, declining arctic sea ice, extreme weather events, ocean acidification and more.
