Sony confirms PlayStation 5 is coming in 2020

It's official. The next PlayStation is the PS5.

Sony has confirmed that its upcoming console will be called the PlayStation 5, or PS5, and that it's arriving in the holidays of 2020, seven years following the release of the current PlayStation 4.

The confirmation comes about six months after Sony shared to Wired some details about the new gaming console, with system architect Mark Cerny telling the news outlet that the PS5 has been in the works for the past four years.

At the time of Cerny's interview with Wired, the new console was not yet confirmed as the PS5.

Most recently, in a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan said the company's goal when it designed the PlayStation 5 was to reinvent the traditional vibration function that is existent in the original PlayStation and to also adopt haptic technology to allow users to feel a range of reactions. The haptic feedback will replace the rumble technology found in Sony's controllers since the 5th generation of consoles, Ryan said.

Sony said this technology will be able to differentiate the feeling of a car hitting a wall to the feeling of tackling an opponent in football.

Moreover, Sony said it also updated the L2 and R2 buttons, also known as adaptive triggers, so that game developers can program the trigger resistance in a way that it would match the actions that players take.

Sony has again directed its fans and readers to an article on Wired, where Sony's Cerny revealed some of the features that will be released with the PS5. In his latest interview with the newswire, Cerny revealed that the PS5 will have an improved speaker.

The announcement comes less than a month after Sony vowed to make its next console - which now points to the PlayStation 5 - more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, ahead of the release of the PS5, Sony said more games will come to the PlayStation 4 in the meantime, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima.
