Volvo's fully electric car will have Android OS for in-car screen display

It's like having an actual Android smartphone inside your car.

Luxury car brand Volvo has announced that its upcoming fully-electric car, the Volvo XC40, will have an in-car display that will run on Android.

Volvo said it is the first car company to integrate Android operating system in cars. Specifically, the Android OS that will run on the Volvo XC40's screen will be based on Android Automotive OS, Google's dedicated Android OS for vehicle dashboards that was introduced back in March 2017.

With Android Automotive installed on the Volvo XC40, drivers can instantly access Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play Store built-in directly on their car's screen.

“We are finally giving you the same experience in your car that you’re used to on your phone, but adapted for safe interaction while driving... And by introducing over-the-air updates for everything from maintenance to completely new features, the car can stay as fresh as your other digital products, always with the latest and greatest features," Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars, said in an announcement.

With Google Assistant, Volvo drivers will be able to control temperature, set a destination, play their favorite songs and podcasts via apps like Spotify, and do more with just their voice. Volvo said the aim of this is to reduce driver distraction in a bid to avoid accidents.

The company added that the Volvo XC40 will receive software and operating system updates over the air, similar to what Tesla has. Just recently, Tesla released its Software Version 10.0, which introduced the new Smart Summon service. Basically, this technology allows drivers to hail their car from where it's parked and let it navigate to them.

The Volvo XC40 is scheduled to be unveiled on Wednesday, on October 16.
