Uber to soon deliver groceries via Cornershop

Customers could soon have their groceries delivered by Uber.

Uber, one of the pioneers of ride-hailing, is on its way to offering grocery delivery after it signed a deal to buy Cornershop, an online grocery provider in Chile, Mexico, Peru and Toronto.

Cornershop lets customers browse any partner store and fill their carts with available grocery items through a smartphone app that's available for Android and iOS devices. Cornershop will deliver the items in at least an hour. Customers can also schedule their delivery for a later time.

Cornershop was founded in 2015 in Chile, with a focus on the Latin American market.

"Whether it’s getting a ride, ordering food from your favorite restaurant, or soon, getting groceries delivered, we want Uber to be the operating system for your everyday life... We’re excited to partner with the team at Cornershop to scale their vision, and look forward to working with them to bring grocery delivery to millions of consumers on the Uber platform," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an announcement.

Uber said its investment in Cornershop is expected to be completed in early 2020, subject to regulatory approval. The company did not disclose the amount of the investment.

"Uber is the perfect partner as we embark on our quest to bring our unique flavor of on-demand groceries from incredible retail partners to many more countries around the world," Cornershop founder and CEO Oskar Hjertonsson commented on the transaction.

The foray into grocery delivery comes over five years after Uber rolled out its Uber Eats online food ordering and delivery platform.

With Uber's entry into the grocery delivery service, the company is facing an intense rivalry with other early entrants including Amazon Fresh, Walmart.com's grocery delivery, Instacart, Shipt, Peapod and more.
