OPPO to release 'world's first' Qualcomm-powered dual-mode 5G

OPPO is ramping up its 5G efforts.

Chinese smartphone maker OPPO said it will soon be offering a new dual-mode 5G smartphone that will be powered by Qualcomm.

The announcement was made by OPPO’s Chief 5G Scientist Henry Tang at the Qualcomm 5G Summit 2019 in Barcelona, Spain.

OPPO claims the new device will be the "world's first" phone to run on Qualcomm’s dual-mode 5G mobile platform, adding that it will support both standalone and non-standalone networks.

The planned move comes as more smartphone makers start to embrace 5G network compatibility. Huawei, another Chinese smartphone maker, is currently at the forefront of this technology as the company already has the infrastructures and technology for its own 5G network.

However, Huawei has faced intense scrutiny overseas, particularly in the United States, dealing a blow to the Chinese tech giant's 5G plans.

Now, other phone manufacturers have also jumped on board the 5G technology, including South Korean consumer electronics behemoth Samsung, which now offers a suite of 5G-compatible phones that would work best in countries with 5G network.

Meanwhile, OPPO's Tang stated that 5G smartphones are starting to become mass produced. Tang said OPPO has an edge over other manufacturers, including in overseas markets, as the company has 5G technologies and products worldwide.

"The unrelenting efforts from OPPO and other industry peers have paved the way for the rapid adoption of 5G, with users in select countries and regions already becoming early adopters of OPPO’s 5G smartphones. We hope our next-generation dual-mode 5G offerings will deliver a superior experience to more consumers in more markets globally, making 5G readily available to a wider consumer base worldwide," Tang said at the conference in Spain.

The very first OPPO 5G device to ever come to Europe was the OPPO Reno 5G that was rolled out in Switzerland back in May. The launch was made possible after OPPO struck a deal with telecommunications company Swisscom.

Moving forward, OPPO will continue working with international operators of telecommunication networks to help commercialize 5G globally.
