Xiaomi plans rollout of over 10 5G phones in 2020

Xiaomi is ramping up its 5G efforts amid strong competition against Huawei.

Xiaomi is planning to release more than 10 5G smartphones next year as the Chinese smartphone company works to beat its local peers such as Huawei.

The plan was announced by Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun at the World Internet conference in the eastern Chinese town of Wuzhen, Reuters reported.

The announcement comes just about a month after Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi Mi 9 Pro, its latest phone that runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset and 5G connection.

Lei reportedly said demand for the new Mi 9 Pro was more than what Xiaomi expected, which is why the company has thought of launching more than 10 phones with 5G connectivity for all of its customer base who prefer to either go for the high, middle, and low-end price tiers.

Lei added that the Mi 9 Pro has been the cause of supply issues for the company, Reuters said.

"People in the industry fear that next year 4G models won’t sell, this is a step you have no choice but to take... So we hope that operators can speed up their expansion of 5G base stations," Lei reportedly said at the conference.

In September, after the launch of the Mi 9 Pro and the Mi 9 Pro 5G, Xiaomi unveiled its Mi MIX Alpha concept smartphone that is also expected to have 5G connection. This planned smartphone will be designed with a screen-to-body ratio of more than 180.6%, sporting what Xiaomi describes as "the world’s first 108MP camera."

Xiaomi said at the time that the Mi MIX Alpha will have a body of titanium alloy, ceramics and sapphire.
