Incognito mode for Google Maps rolls out on Android devices

Maps will no longer save your location history on your Google Account.

As promised, Google has started rolling out Incognito mode for Google Maps on Android devices, allowing users to disable saving data when they use the Maps.

When enabled, Incognito mode on Google Maps will not save users' browse or search history or send them notifications. It will also not update users' location history or shared location or use users' personal data to personalize Maps.

Users can now ensure that whenever they turn on Incognito mode on Google Maps, the places they search would not be synced into their Google Account.

Among the features that won't be available on Incognito mode are the commute feature, your location history, location sharing, notifications and messages, search history, search completion suggestions, Google Maps Contributions, Google Assistant microphone in Navigation, offline maps, Your Places and media integration.

Note that the Google Assistant microphone is not available in navigation when on Incognito mode. However, “Ok Google” will still work as usual.

To turn on Incognito mode on Maps, simply open the Maps app, tap on your profile picture and tap on “Turn on Incognito mode.” To turn off Incognito mode, just follow the same process and hit “Turn off Incognito mode.”

Incognito mode on Google Maps will soon be available on iOS devices.

The rollout comes as Google and other tech giants like Facebook face intense scrutiny over the way they handle user data.

Earlier this year, Google's voice assistant, along with those of Apple, Amazon and others, were found to be keeping records of customers' recordings even when their voice assistants were not triggered.

These companies have announced measures to address this, including letting users opt in or out of getting their recordings gathered by the companies for assessment.
