Nintendo's Mario Kart to launch multiplayer mode on beta in December

Multiplayer mode will soon be available for players who have been waiting for the feature since the launch of the smartphone version.

Following the success of Nintendo’s Mario Kart Tour for smartphones, the Japanese gaming giant has hinted at its plans to launch multiplayer mode in response to players’ requests.

In just a month after its launch on September 25, Mario Kart Tour has so far amassed a skyrocketing 123.9 million downloads from both the App Store and Google Play.

At the company’s most recent earnings presentation, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the company will start beta testing real-time multiplayer battles in December, with plans for full-scale release afterwards.

“Going forward, we will encourage users to continue playing Mario Kart Tour through a combination of feature expansions and operational management, with the goal of making this an evergreen title for smart device owners,” Furukawa said.

Mario Kart Tour is now available in 163 countries and regions. Prior to the release on Android and iOS devices, the kart-racing game has been widely popular in older Nintendo consoles. The first in the franchise, called Super Mario Kart was first released in 1992 on the SNES, or the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

It later rolled out to later Nintendo platforms with different versions such as the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which launched on the Nintendo Switch in 2017.

Mario Kart Tour for Android and iOS devices takes Mario and his friends on a world tour as they race around courses across real-world cities. The destinations that are inspired by cities in the real world will rotate every two weeks.

Players can steer and drift their karts with just one finger. To play Mario Kart Tour, you will be prompted to sign in to your Nintendo account. If you’re new to the Nintendo world, you can easily create an account when you open the Mario Kart Tour app.
