Apple is working on AR, VR headsets and glasses

Apple could be launching new hardware sooner than you expected.

Apple could soon foray into AR and VR gaming as the company is reportedly developing a series of augmented and virtual-reality headsets and glasses.

According to Bloomberg News, the maker of MacBooks, iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches is looking to launch a combined VR and AR headset by 2021 or 2022, with plans to release a lightweight pair of AR glasses by 2023.

The report, which cited people familiar with the plans, said Apple's soon-to-be-released iPad Pro model will sport a new module with two camera sensors and a small hole for the 3D system, which could pave the way for people to create three-dimensional reconstructions of rooms, objects and people. The new iPad Pro is slated for release in the first half of 2020.

Moving forward, Apple also plans to introduce the new sensor to future high-end iPhones in 2020. The report added that the new iPhones will likely have 5G connectivity.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg said Apple initially planned to roll out the AR and VR integration on its devices in 2020 after working on the technology for several years. However, one of the sources told the news outlet that Apple postponed the release.

The sources also told the news outlet that Apple is working to enhance the Face ID sensor on the front of the latest Apple devices.

Apple's potential release of VR glasses would follow Amazon's introduction of its Alexa-enabled Echo Frames that lets users make calls, set reminders, add items to to-do lists, listen to podcasts, or control their smart home from anywhere by simply hailing Alexa from the glasses. It is not yet known whether Apple's rumored VR glasses would share the same features and Apple has yet to confirm or deny the reports.
