Going International on Facebook

Facebook is available worldwide with few country exceptions. Many people use Facebook as a selling tool and often limit their coverage to their home country, or even their own region of the country. Marketing in this way is missing a trick as going international on Facebook has its rewards.

There is little doubt that Facebook as a marketing tool is a simple way to market products and services, and the audience is worldwide. In his October 2019 article “ The Like Minded and Facebook” stated: ”According to the latest research from digital marketing firm Zephoria, as of June of this year there were 2.41 billion monthly active users, an 8% increase from the previous year; and 1.59 billion people on average log onto Facebook daily and could be considered daily active users. The average time spent per Facebook visit was reported to be 20 minutes, and 16 million local business pages had been created as of May 2013, a 100% increase from 8 million in June 2012.”

Considering all this and the fact that Facebook has a global reach it is now time to go international with Facebook - if you are not doing it already.

What Are the Issues with Going International?

To start with there is the language and the alphabet of the language to overcome. It is lucky that many countries have a good understanding of English, but you will still need to address the language and alphabet issue for some countries. As it happens, Facebook can help here by using their Facebook Locations site which also shows you how to set up many country locations.

Facebook will be able to enable the setting up of accounts in your chosen countries, but these accounts will be brand new with no following by anyone and no likes by anyone.

It is lucky if everything is in one language (such as English) as when anyone in the world clicks on a region-specific link with the local URL (such .es or .co.ru, etc.), the site that opens will be the root page of your local URL (such as .com) as the web browser will go to the Facebook default page (which in this example will be in English).

If you want a totally different Facebook page for some regions, a separate Facebook page will be needed rather than using the root page. Facebook gives guidance on doing this on their Facebook for Media page.

It is a good idea to see what multiple regional pages look like before setting up your own. There is a plethora of examples of this that are used by the international brands. For example, go to the McDonald’s Facebook page and you will see the page in your language and relevant to where you are. It is possible to see what the page looks like in other regions by one of two methods. If you hover the mouse over the drop-down menu near the top and select More and then select the Switch Region option from the drop-down. It is possible to then select a McDonald’s page from a different region and even in a different language. On some McDonald’s pages this can be carried out by selecting the three-dot hamburger menu to the right of the Share drop-down and then selecting Switch Region.

How to do Go International

To get a Facebook accounts for your chosen countries, it is best to get an aged account that is not currently used and can be easily purchased and re-used. Such aged Facebook accounts can be obtained from such sites as, accsmarket and this site also offers help on how to setup these accounts.

Facebook has recently introduced special new features incorporating a range of templates, making it easier to design the Facebook ads. According to Peter Roesler, President, Web Marketing Pros, a contributor writing for Inc.com, in his October 2019 article: “ Facebook Introduces New Features to Help Holiday Advertisers”, “These new vertical templates are a win-win situation for everyone. Facebook gets to raise the quality of ads on the platform by giving marketing teams good-looking templates to start with. Businesses can save time creating assets for a single ad campaign, which means they’ll have time to make more ad campaigns, and more ad campaigns mean more money for Facebook.”

Conclusion

To go international on Facebook, there are marketing tools available on the Facebook site, including the new templates. To get over the fact that registering a new Facebook foreign account will mean that the account has no followers or likes, buying an aged site is the best way to get started.
