Savvy consumers can still find good deals on Black Friday, GlobalData says

GlobalData retail analyst Zoe Mills believes customers can still take advantage of the shopping event to get the best deal and save money ahead of the Christmas season?

Black Friday sales can still offer good deals to savvy customers, according to leading data and analytics company GlobalData.

Consumer group Which? released a report on November 26 saying Black Friday, which will happen on November 29, is not usually the best time of the year to find a bargain.

GlobalData retail analyst Zoe Mills believes customers are becoming savvier to deals from retailers and are more accustomed to looking for the best deal.

Even though some deals can be found cheaper or available for the same price at other times of the year, Mills said in a release that Black Friday still gives shoppers the opportunity to score the best deal and save money on presents in the run-up to the Christmas season.

Mills added that while some retailers do take advantage of the occasion to exaggerate promotions, the tactic is not limited to Black Friday.

“[A]nd while Which? correctly highlights that Black Friday discounts do not always stand out when taking a longer term view of prices, this is due to the fact that retailers are having to offer discounts much more frequently in order to drive sales in the current difficult retail climate,” according to Mills.

In its report, Which? monitored 83 items for sale during Black Friday 2018 in the United Kingdom and found that 95% were cheaper or the same price from the same store at least once in the next six months. The consumer group also found that 61% of the products were cheaper or the same price at least once before the shopping event.

Natalie Hitchins, head of home products and services at Which?, said shoppers should not fall for the “pressure tactics” around the popular shopping day. “Our investigation indicates that this popular shopping event is all hype and there are few genuine discounts,” Hitchins added in the report.
