US consumers spent record $7.4B in online purchases on Black Friday

About $2.9 billion of that amount were recorded from purchases made with smartphones.

Shoppers in the U.S. have spent a record $7.4 billion in online purchases during Black Friday on November 29, according to data from Adobe Analytics.

Adobe said shoppers still took advantage of Black Friday deals on the actual day of Black Friday despite retailers hosting early deals ahead of the holiday shopping event.

The report noted that Black Friday was the biggest shopping day for mobile shopping, with customers using smartphones recording $2.9 billion in sales, accounting for about 39% of all online purchases. That’s a 21% increase from last year, Adobe said.

“Black Friday broke mobile shopping records with $2.9 billion spent through smartphones alone. With Christmas now rapidly approaching, consumers increasingly jumped on their phones rather than standing in line. Even when shoppers went to stores, they were now buying nearly 41% more online before going to the store to pick up,” Taylor Schreiner, Principal Analyst & Head of Adobe Digital Insights, said in a statement.

In its latest update to the 2019 holiday shopping period, Adobe said the best-selling product during Black Friday was L.O.L Surprise! Dolls, followed by Frozen 2 Toys, FIFA 20, Madden 20 and the Nintendo Switch. Other consumer electronic items like Apple laptops, Airpods, and Samsung TVs also saw high numbers of sales on November 29, Adobe said.

From November 1 to 29, customers in the U.S. have spent $64.5 billion in holiday shopping, down from the predicted $143.8 billion and from last year’s $126 billion.

The report added that the bigger online retailers like Amazon continued to outperform their smaller rivals, driven by smartphone sales.

Adobe said it will continue to update its 2019 holiday sales forecast throughout the holiday season.
