Tesla may have brought the electric vehicle (EV) to the masses, but mainstream automakers are hot in Elon Musk's heels with new electric models to challenge the upstart California company and secure market share in niches Tesla has yet to penetrate. Case-in-point, the new all-electric Ford Transit van.

Vans might not grace the cover of the latest edition of Motor Trend but in the practical world, where businesses need to move goods across town day-in and day-out, the van is the weapon of choice. Electric power makes good sense for vans, and Ford knows it.

A Van of Pedigree

Unlike the flea-flicker Ford pulled with the "Mustang" Mach-E, they're newest auto show sweetheart, the electric Transit van's naming scheme makes perfect sense. That's because unlike the awkward-but-intriguing electric crossover, an electrified Transit would essentially be the same vehicle as the existing Transit, which is a hugely popular workhorse vehicle in the United States and Europe.

Power to Burn

The reason you see automakers racing to bring an electric pickup truck to market is that electric motors offer very practical power delivery for work vehicles. Their instant, plentiful torque makes towing and hauling a cinch. When you consider the cross-town trips most work vans spend their days making, any concern for a shortage of range due to the van's electric drivetrain goes out the window.

By adding the electric Transit to their lineup, Ford would shift their overall fleet emissions in a positive way. So not only would the van be a popular vehicle, it would help shore up their ability to continue building gasoline-powered F150s and other trucks. Mind you, the F150 is also slated to get an electric powertrain in the not-so-distant future.

Inside Competition

If there is a viable competitor for the new Transit, it might just come from a company that Ford has invested heavily, Rivian. Rivian has received a $500 million transfusion from Ford to get their electrified truck technology squared away, but they're also planning to build an electric van. And Amazon has already placed an order for 100,000 Rivians, so look elsewhere, Ford.

Still, moving the market in the direction of all-electric is going to take some sacrifices. Ford probably understands that there will be plenty of market share left even after the Rivian launches. The Transit is slated for a 2023 launch, but you can bet the top brass in Detroit are pushing to shave every day they can off of that target date.
