Mattel’s American Girl debuts 2020 Girl of the Year: Joss

The 2020 American Girl has been unveiled and she’s none other than Joss Kendrick, or simply Joss.

Mattel-owned doll brand American Girl has welcomed 2020 by debuting Joss Kendrick.

Joss is a strong athlete with hearing loss. She’s passionate about surfing and competitive cheerleading. Joss can either be found at the gym or on her surfboard.

Joss stands 18 inches tall and she dons a beautiful long brown hair and brown eyes. She comes wearing a swimsuit, hoodie, and shorts, plus a removable hearing aid in her right ear. Joss also comes with a surfboard and swim gear, cheer outfits and equipment—including a cheer backpack, slides, and competition shoes. Kids will also be surprised to find Joss’ talented English bulldog, Murph the Surf Dog, in every purchase of the Joss doll.

American Girl said it has teamed up with athletes and experts to create Joss, including Women’s Deaf Shortboard champion Crystal DaSilva, Fury Athletics training gym owners Sara Jo Moen and Julie Peterson, and professional big wave surfer and co-founder of the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing, Bianca Valenti.

Dr. Sharon Pajka, a professor of English at Gallaudet University and a specialist in portrayals of deaf characters in adolescent literature, as well as Jennifer Richardson, an educational audiologist and founder of Hearing Milestones Foundation, also took part in designing the Joss doll.

“American Girl has a rich legacy of creating timeless characters who encourage girls to reach for new heights and discover who they’re meant to be… We’re proud to welcome Joss Kendrick, whose stories are sure to instill confidence and character in girls who are learning to think about the possibilities in their own lives,” American Girl General Manager Jamie Cygielman said in a statement.

Additionally, American Girl has also announced that it has teamed up with 17-year-old surfer Caroline Marks to introduce Joss to surfing fans. Marks is a member of the first-ever U.S. Women’s Olympic surfing team.

“I’m so excited to be a part of the Joss launch and share her message that passion and hard work can really take a girl places—even to the Olympics,” Marks was quoted as saying.

“Working with Olympic hopeful surfer Caroline Marks adds real-world inspiration about what can happen when you go ‘all in’ on your dreams,” American Girl’s Cygielman added.

Every purchase of Joss also comes with a two-book series. The entire American Girl Joss set will retail for $98.
