Trending Toy Lines of 2020

Another year over and with the amount of high quality superhero and anime figures on the market, it’s almost impossible to tell what’s worth grabbing before while they’re still available. So to help here’s a rundown of some of the best toy lines out there worthy of your hard earned cash, and just what they’ve been up to for the last 12 months.

Covering everything from anime and tokusatsu to the Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bandai Tamashii Nations' flagship line arguably rules the roost when it comes to high-end poseable figures at the six-inch scale. Among their steady flow of Kamen Rider and Ultraman figures, Bandai have also kept on top of their game by keeping up with the latest film releases. 2019 kicked off with the Western release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, not only bringing fan favourites Broly and Gogeta back into Dragon Ball canon but also displays of collectors across the world. May then saw the release of the titanic Avengers: Endgame, with Figuarts pulling out all the stops to not only announce but also RELEASE the latest version of the Marvel heroes within mere months of the film's premiere. Now as the year ends so does another landmark story with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and you only need to take one look at the SH Figuarts on offer to feel a great disturbance in the Force. Or rather, your wallet.

Then again, if you’re more into a wider spectrum of anime figures then the ever popular Figma range was definitely the way to go this year. The world of video games may dominated 2019 with releases from the Persona Series, Overwatch and Splatoon, but if you happened to be a fan of the Fate Series then you certainly had a lot of toys to keep on top of (most significantly “Rider of Black” and all round best boy Astolfo from Fate/Apocrypha). As usual you’ll always find some completely left field choices amongst Figma’s roster, including Alien, Predator and even Edvard Munch’s classic painting “The Scream”. One of those is not quite like the others…

Ever since Medicom decided to get into the six-inch figure game back in 2013, they've spent a lot of time playing catch up to the Bandai juggernaut. However 2019 was the year their MAFEX "Miracle Action Figure" line really came into its own and went head to head with its rivals. As well as giving S.H. Figuarts a run for their money with their own MCU figures, MAFEX has begun to dominate the superhero scene with comic-styled figures like Spider-Man, Venom, Deadpool and the X-Men. With the line branching out into both DC Comics and the ever popular Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse next year, could MAFEX be poised to finally take the crown from their main competitor?

But where do you go if you like a bit of everything and normal proportions just don’t do it for you? Nobody churns out figures quite like Good Smile Company and their super deformed but super cute Nendoroid line, with well over 200 releases in 2019 alone. Highlights included a whole bunch of Disney, more Fate Series, Laid-Back Camp, Persona 5 and a little known series by the name of My Hero Academia. When it comes to sheer range, Nendoroid always take the crown.
